Nicola: [00:00:00] Hey, welcome to the female leaders on fire podcast. I’m your host. I’m Nicola Buckley ad. I am the coach work with women at the top of organizations. I’m aspiring future leaders, helping them to find their fires, that passion. That purpose, that real heartfelt excitement, knowing that you’re doing the thing that you’re meant to do.
And with that as well, what that means is you’ve got to have more impact, have more influence and more income as a result, and also become a real force for good driving positive change in your organization. So today we are still on the coaching series. Uh, today, I just want it to just really just outline what you can expect from coaching when you start coaching.
So kind of how to know when you need coaching, how to prepare, and then what happens when we start coaching. So when to know that you might need coaching, so. It might be that you’re feeling [00:01:00] resentful in your role. It might be that you’re feeling frustrated. It might feel that you’re not feeling heard.
You’re not feeling appreciated. And it might feel that you’re lacking a little bit and you’ve maybe have lost a bit of confidence. You lost a little bit, the sense of who you are. You’ve just got very, very busy giving so much of yourself and you’re trying to be everything to everyone, but those are some of the symptoms, but clients have come to me have had a lot of different reasons for starting coaching.
So. For example, some are at a crossroads in their career. They feel like they’ve got one or two more big roles left in them and they want to get clear on what that looks like for other women. They might be coming back after having children. They’re feeling a bit less confident on the organization has changed.
They really want to get that confidence back and make a real impact for the big. The other women, they might be struggling with having a very challenging boss, or they might be in a environment that for them feels quite toxic or for other women, they might be new into a much bigger role and they might want that support are going to make that [00:02:00] first initial impact.
Or it might be someone at a more junior level that is really ambitious and really driven, but they just want a little bit of time and space to really think about how they get to the next level. And then for some women, They wanted to find their leadership brand and their leadership style. I just spend some real quality time on just defining what that is and how they can show up and have that real impact and that real, that real influence, that real impact.
So there’s a whole different list of reasons why women come to me and some of those at a time in a career where they might be struggling a bit. So women have come to me when they’re signed off work with anxiety, when they’re having to take a bit of forced leave, just because of. So burnt out. It might be that they’ve been recommended for counseling or they might have been, um, the doctor might have offered them antidepressant.
So that’s when you’re kind of at that end of the scale where you really need some immediate support on help. But if we go further back up that gradient. It might be [00:03:00] that someone is just like, they know that there is more of them and actually a new coaching clients said that last week, I know that I can do more.
I know that I can have more impact and help more people. I just need some helps get that. So you will know that you need to make a change. So when you know that you need coaching, you will know that you need to do something differently. You will have a sense of something more for you. It might not be an obvious next step or way forward.
And it might be that you just feel like actually, you know what, it’s time to get some professional. So, first of all, that is when to know that you need coaching. And the other thing to say with that is just like everyone is slightly different. Everyone would have a slightly different reason, a site, a different drive and all of those welcome.
That’s something that we discussed on an initial core foundation called before we started working together. What are you expecting for coaching? What what’s driven you to, to ask him for help? Why? Right here right now. So the next thing I was just going to talk about is just really how to prepare yourself for coaching and how to get the most from it.
So like we said before, coaching is client lab and it’s very [00:04:00] client focused and we set a goal. We worked wards that together in our coaching sessions with those intuitive questions. So we can really go quite deep. And then we check in with that progress as we go for a session. So before you start coaching and really great thing to think about is what will make this coaching a wow.
Well, we’ll make it really impactful. What will make it really know that it’s worth every single penny that I’ve invested every minute of time, that I’ve committed to this and really think about having a super clear goal. And there, the reason we do that is because there’s a process in the brain called the reticular activating system and that part of the brain, the clearer you can be, the more it looks for information to support that.
So before coaching, just think about what the goals, what do I really want to get from them? What would make this an absolutely wild for me? What would I look back if I knew or did differently? What would be the most impactful thing that I could learn or know about myself? So it’s really to think about [00:05:00] what would you like to be different?
What would need to be different for this to be an absolute life transformation for you? So have a think about those questions and the other thing before you start coaching is the. Coaches that are part of the ICF. For example, you will be sent a contract and that will outline the expectations of you as a client.
And me as a coach, those are worth spending a time to look at, to review because really that’s your contract. It’s a contract of your relationship. That’s a framework of how your work to. So it’s really, really important to make sure that you understand that. Um, what can you expect from coaching sessions?
So poaching sessions she can expect to just really can show up as you are. So if you’re having a day where you’re having a wobble, if you’re not feeling so great, it’s still it’s okay to turn up with that. It’s okay to know that you don’t need to be a certain way to get really a huge amount from a coaching session, but you can’t expect a coaching session to feel quite intense.
You might feel quite tired after. [00:06:00] You might feel just a bit drained the day after. And it’s just really important to think about potential. If you can, at the end of that day or after the session, maybe getting out in nature, maybe doing something that really helps relax. You have a note part and a pen there so that you can make some notes so that there’s some clear actions and next step and allow some time after those coaching sessions to take the inspired actions and really implement those changes.
And if you do feel tired, if you do feel emotion afterwards, if it’s sports ops and things that you’ve not thought about before for a long time, just, just go gently. Yourselves is always worth saying ops and time before the coaching session to really check in with your goals where you are with those.
And then afterwards, just allowing yourself some time to really integrate your thinking, to really implement some changes and take that inspired action. So that’s if you stay, so that’s our coaching miniseries. So hopefully it’s been helpful.
